How the Story Goes

by Joseph Hsu
(may 2007)

Letters fall in line, one-by-one,
finding their place in the right words.
Diction says this is how it goes.

We fall in line, one-by-one,
finding our place in the right crowd.
Fate says this is how it goes.

The space between paragraphs
is where we wondered the "what if"s.
Flipping the pages, we remember the last.
The period comes, the only time to breathe.

The space between us
is where we wondered the "what if"s.
Year to year, we remember the last.
the summer comes, the only time to breathe.

In that breath, we realize,
it was a good book.

In that breath, we realize,
it was a good year.
